Audrey Hepburn would have felt right at home there - either as Eliza Doolittle or as Holly Golightly.

I was lucky to be there on such a beautiful morning. Lots of families and big prams and gorgeous flowers - including thistles.

Artemis - Goddess of the Hunt

Artemis Oia Cat

During our entire 4 or 5 days there - she would arrive in the morning and visit while we drank tea and watched the sunrise over the crater.

He is getting this because he and his friend Rory raised money for their sister school in Tanzania through a group called Africa Bridges. With that money the school bought a generator and had electricity and lights at their school for the first time.

He probably will not send his sister school any pumpkins. But he has such a big heart - he might try.

One of the great things about walking around a city like London is that you come upon a statue like this - of someone you have no idea who they are and it forces you to do a little research. James Henry Greathead was an engineer who helped pioneer some of the tunneling techniques to build under ground railroads - like the Tube. I won't go into detail about how underground tunnels were first built - but I've seen pictures and let's just say it was slow and incredibly labor intensive. Greathead and others changed that and helped create one of the great subways of the world.

Hood to Coast - Where's the Beach?

Look how happy we are. Look how clean we are. We stayed pretty happy but we sure didn't stay clean. This is the gang from Van # 1 from left - Janice, Bernd, Amy, Elle, Alex and Shannon. Amazing what 26 hours together can do.

Hood to Coast Fun

Hood to Coast Triumph

Barlow Road Gang

We had a nearly perfect Hood to Coast run with the St. Vincent Harriers. Obviously the one imperfection from the weekend was the lame team name - gotta work on that for next year.

But the whole weekend went great - we finished in 26:28:42 about an hour faster than we had predicted. There were no injuries, no missed exchanges and everyone had a great time. We even got to meet a very cute puppy!

So what's not to love - running until you hurt, more gatorade injested than humanly possible, no sleep, sweaty stinky van air for 26 hours and a puppy!

I will write more in a bit but here is some of our team - from left Theresa our incredible driver - she was Danica Patrick and then some; Bernd Cooper - Our Ironman Leg #5; Alex "Thank you for volunteering" Jackson; Shannon - insane enough to run leg #1; and Elle - Shannon's daughter who ran faster than any 17 year old should be allowed to run.

Not pictured - Janice - our leader and who got us into this craziness - Janice this is what we do while you are out running - we stand around waiting for direction.

I want to bring the croissants back to our litle pensione on the edge of the cliff in Oia and watch the caiques go out for the day's fishing, and watch the sun rise over this beautiful volcanic crater called Thira.

Yes some day.

Bob Lakey - 1931-2008

It has been a sad month since our finish. On July 19 - Bob Lakey - Janice's father passed. The most profound moment during our marathon weekend was going to visit Bob. He could not speak much and he was weak. But the way his eyes lit up and sparkled so when he saw Janice - the way he held her hand so tightly - the tremendous amount of love that passed between them as they held hands - is something I will never forget. He was a great man, a loving husband and an even better dad.

I See You Dancing Father

No sooner downstairs after the night’s rest
And in the door
Then you started to dance a step in the middle of the kitchen floor.

And as you danced
You whistled.
You made your own music
Always in tune with yourself.

Well, nearly always, anyway.
And whenever I think of you

I go back beyond the old man
Mind and body broken
To find the unbroken man.
It is the moment before the dance begins,

Your lips are enjoying themselves
Whistling an air.
Whatever happens or cannot happen
In the time I have to spare
I see you dancing, father.

Finis

Well we did it! It was not easy but we did finish - in 90 - 95 degree heat and on a course than can only be described as mountainous! I am so proud of Mary and Janice. Mary for taking marathon off her list and doing it in such a macho way. And Janice who I can't thank enough for getting me through. She is the best running partner ever!

More details to come...

Are we nuts?

Marathon - Still happy?
Originally uploaded by thistleamy5
We are going to do this.... again! Somehow since it has been 2 years we have either forgotten how painful this is...or we are just plain ole crazy.

Anyways we are 6 days away from another 26.2 miles. Look how happy we are - that's cause this is only at mile 10 - barely a third of the way. If i think about it too much - head explodes.

We are doing the Seafair Marathon which starts at U of W which bodes very well for Janice. Not good at all for me being such a Duck fan... what was I thinking?

We cross the 520 bridge and then run all over hell and back in Redmond and Bellevue.

This is for Mary - who has been so tough and resilient through a really tough 6 months. I don't know how she has done this - train - run her company - save her loved ones - and remain sane. She is incredible and if anything will get me through miles 20 - 26 it will be the thought of Mary doing it all with only an ipod, her two strong legs, great lungs and a will tougher than anyone I know.

Mary - you go girl - there is nothing you can't do.

Hopefully a camera will capture some of the action.

Tour de France Time

Sad that Euro 2008 is coming to an end? Well despite its drug isues - the Tour is still a great sporting event and Portlanders have an added interest in this year's tour as the Boyle Family and Columbia Sportswear are sponsoring "Team High Road". This young team is led by George Hincapie and a bunch of guys I've never heard of - but at least it gives us a local angle.

See this story:

Columbia Story

I have not heard if The Lucky Lab will be getting a big screen and showing the broadcast but I will have to find somewhere to watch.

Is this Andrea?

OK I'm checking to see if anyone is paying attention. But go to this website and scroll down to the bit about Caffe Umbria and the picture of all those cool people watching soccer.

Is that Andrea?
